The TV remote control was invented in 1956 by an inventor named Robert Adler. It was an invention of convenience, making it possible for people to change channels without having to get up from their seats. Americans fell in love with inventions such as the remote control, which symbolized absolute convenience to them. In 1957 a car was manufactured that started with a push-button. And in 1958 an article appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine which told about the future of society with push-button appliances and machinery. Remote control devices have since become so popular that four out of five color television sets sold in the United States today have remote control units. Stereos, CD players, VCRs, and even automobile alarms are sold today with remote control functions. The remote control unit gave birth to another American institution, the couch potato.
